When it comes to installing rigid core vinyl flooring, one of the most common questions people ask is whether they need to leave expansion gaps. The short answer is yes, and here’s why.
Rigid core vinyl flooring, with its waterproof and durable qualities, has become a popular choice for homeowners looking to update their floors. However, unlike glue-down vinyl, click rigid core vinyl flooring needs expansion gaps to accommodate for any changes in temperature or humidity.
This is because rigid core vinyl flooring, despite its name, still contains a core layer made up of a combination of materials, including PVC, limestone, and stabilizers. While this layer is not as susceptible to expansion and contraction as wood, it can still react to changes in temperature and humidity, causing it to expand or contract slightly.
Leaving expansion gaps around the perimeter of the room and any fixed objects, such as pipes or cabinets, allows the flooring to expand and contract without buckling or warping. Typically, the recommended gap size is around ΒΌ inch, but this may vary depending on the manufacturer’s instructions.
On the other hand, glue-down vinyl flooring does not require expansion gaps. This is because it is glued directly to the subfloor, allowing it to expand and contract as one unit. However, it is still essential to ensure the subfloor is level and free from any debris before installation to prevent any damage to the flooring over time.
In summary, while expansion gaps may seem like a small detail, they are crucial for the longevity and performance of your rigid core vinyl flooring. So, when in doubt, always refer to the manufacturer’s instructions and leave those gaps!
