How to clean a laminate floor

Laminate flooring is incredibly durable and cleaning it couldn’t be easier. We have written a guide to make things simple for you when cleaning your laminate floor. Many laminate floors come with generous manufacturing warranties, however, these can become void if the cleaning is done incorrectly. The biggest enemy of laminate flooring is moister – they hate each other. As laminate flooring is made from wood, avoiding exposure to moister is a must.

How to clean a laminate floor: ( Including what not to do )

  • Sweep, dust, or vacuum the floor regularly with the hard floor attachment, to prevent the accumulation of dirt and grit

  • Use a damp cloth to blot up spills as soon as they happen. Never allow liquids to stand on your floor.
  • For tough spots, such as oil, paint, markers, lipstick, ink or tar, use acetone/nail polish remover on a clean white cloth. Then wipe the area with a damp cloth to remove any remaining residue.
  • Periodically clean the floor with cleaning products made specifically for laminate floor care.
  • Do not wash or wet mop the floor with soap, water, oil-soap detergent or any other liquid cleaning product. This could cause swelling, warping, delamination, and joint-line separation, and void the warranty.
  • For spots such as candle wax or chewing gum, harden the spot with ice and then gently scrape with a plastic scraper, such as a credit card. Be careful not to scratch the flooring surface. Wipe clean with a damp cloth.
  • Do not use any type of buffing or polishing machine on your laminate floors.
  • Do not use steam cleaners or wet mops, which may cause irreparable damage to your floor.

This guide will help keep your laminate floor looking like new for years to come and should keep your manufacturing warranties in check. It’s also worth noting, laminate flooring manufacturers have started introducing highly moister resistant flooring. These can go under different names such as hydro or Aqua boards. It’s always best to check with the manufactures guides on cleaning these types of floor, as some will allow you to use steep mops and other types of cleaning products.
